If you arrived at this page looking for a particular classical music piece so you could listen to it and find out what it sounds like, Tips for Searching for Music on the Internet has a list of websites and other resources that might help you find what you're looking for.

If you are searching for hard to find information about classical music or early 1900's popular music and you didn't find it here, that same Tips for Searching page might help you continue your search. Its sections are search engine tips, searching the "invisible" web, music search resources visible and invisible, and how to find album contents information, track timings, liner notes and background information, lyrics, scores and sheet music, audio files, music analysis, commentary and reviews, and where to identify the source of a classical music theme.

What is this page?

This set of web pages presents data from the RECORDS.MDB classical record collection database as CSV (Comma Separated Values) plain text. It has the contents of record albums, record company ID#s, and my brief reviews and comments about the composers, compositions, and performances.

If this jumble of text looks like the type of information you were looking for, this 420 KB file tracksforbrowsingandsearching.zip has the information from all these pages neatly formatted into a single table. The full unzipped table is nearly 7 MB, too big to put on a single web page because no one would wait for it to load. Unzip it and open the .htm file with your browser.

The project download section of RECORDS.MDB has this data in a tab delimited plain text format that should import properly into Excel or other spreadsheet or database programs. Lastly, if you download the RECORDS.MDB database itself, all this data is in it.

5,D'Indy,Symphony On A French Mountain Air For Orchestra And Piano, Op. 25,,The Philadelphia Orchestra,Eugene Ormandy,Robert Casadesus, Piano,A symphony that uses piano as solo and as part of orchestra; mostly a nebulous-themed fantasy, Wagnerian-romantic in having an endless evolution of musical effects without an evident central driving theme or idea; became boring.,,,33,345

4,Dohnanyi,Cello Concerto, Op. 12,,Philharmonia Orchestra,Susskind,Janos Starker, Cello,Sounds like Brahms in moods, harmonies, orchestration; liner notes also compare to Strauss, Schumann; but I found it meanderingly lyrical, directionless, and boring.,,,33,1251

3,Dohnanyi,Quartet 2 Op 15,,Curtis String Quartet,,,Seems a style very much his own, with rhythmic motifs as much as melodies, which themselves are pretty weird. I *think* I like it ok... R2 minus 1 for possibly poor perf; I think the players are out of tune, creating unintended discord.,,,33,988

2,Dohnanyi,Quintet 2 Op 26,,Curtis String Quartet,,Sokoloff, Piano,Same comments apply, but this one has more melody and is more inherently likable. Piano provides a reference -- the strings *are* out of tune!,,,33,988

4,Dohnanyi,Ruralia Hungarica Op 32b,,Philharmonia Orchestra Of London,Schuechter,,tone poems: 1 above avg, 1 boring,,,33,951

2,Dohnanyi,Serenade In C,,San Francisco Symphony,Monteux,Heifetz,Serenade somewhat misleading, it's easier to remember as an excellent trio, evoking Schubert, Mendelssohn, and according to liner notes, Brahms. Interesting & enjoyable. Exc. perf.,,,33,535

2,Dohnanyi,Variations On A Nursery Song. Opus 25,Rachmaninov Dohnanyi,The London Philharmonic Orchestra,Sir Adrian Boult,Julius Katchen (Piano),Very entertaining, esp. with notes on back. Exc. perf. 4,Donizetti,Lucia Di Lammermoor,,Orchestra and Chorus of the Florence May Festival 1953,Tullio Serafin,Maria Callas,Not bad for an opera, except Callas's voice is hard edged & ear-piercing. The music, not prominent or compelling, sounds in places Beethoven-influenced, and may in turn have influenced Gilbert & Sullivan.,,,33,1788

2,Dusek,Parthia In F For Two Oboes, Two Horns And Bassoon,Rarities From The Classical Era,The Czech Philharmonic Chorus, Musici Pragenses, and The Prague Chamber Harmony,,,Sounds similar to the music for PBS show Dragon Tales, gentle horn-tooting pre-Beethoven; exc. perf.,The whole album is on HD for now because it makes for pleasant background music.,,33,1623

4,Dvorak,Cello Concerto In B Minor, Op. 104,,Czech Philharmonic Orchestra,Vaclav Talich,Mstislav Rostropovich, Cello,1st mvmt pervasively Gypsy-themed; 2nd is plausibly based on Negro spirituals (during his trip to U.S., same as New World Symphony); 3rd is Gypsy again, or a synthesis? A political statement equating the two peoples? Musically, seems like a hodge-podge.,,,33,663

0,Dvorak,Othello Overture,Op 93,,The Czech Philharmonic Orchestra,Vaclav Talich,,,,,33,1091

2,Dvorak,Piano Concerto In G Minor Op 33,,Vienna State Opera Orchestra,Somogyi,Firkusny, Piano,Quite enjoyable in spite of having romantic embellishments of rather weak or nonresonant themes; in 1st mvmt, I'd swear I hear Frere Jacques and Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, and am reminded of other nursery songs.,,,33,817

3,Dvorak,Piano Quintet,,Budapest Quartet,,Clifford Curzon, Piano,1st mvmt absurdly hyperdramatic; the rest has many moods, from beautiful to sad, humorous, lively; pleasant, sort of interesting, but its diversity and attitude kept it from holding my attention or even taking it very ; (see memo),seriously, in spite of its quality; considered a "quintessential" portrait of Dvorak himself.,,33,2089

3,Dvorak,String Quintet In A Minor, Op. 1,,Berlin Philharmonic Octet,,,Seems well done; has some beauty, excitement, drama, and the inspiration that an Op. 1 often does; even so, it didn't hold my attention much.,,,33,2281

3,Dvorak,String Sextet In A Major, Op. 48,,Berlin Philharmonic Octet,,,Soothing pretty background music with a boringly uniform sound throughout, until the finale, which is too little too late to make the piece interesting.,,,33,2281

2,Dvorak,Symphony No. 9 In E Minor, Op. 95, "New World",,Columbia Symphony Orchestra,Bruno Walter,,1st mvmt rousing with good theme; 2nd sensitive interp of dull music; 3rd & 4th ok; a great perf of music that doesn't much grab me, in spite of some very good themes; (see memo),Dvorak himself said he used no Negro or Indian themes in it; this record calls it Symphony No. 9, another calls it No. 5.,,33,2132

1,Dvorak,Violin Concerto,,Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra,William Steinberg,Nathan Milstein, Violin,Sounds inexplicably familiar, and sounds like a sibling of the Brahms cto, with identical spirit and many methods (Joachim's influence?), with more explicit Gypsy themes; for effectiveness, rivals Brahms & Beethoven (from whom it also borrows a theme).,Exc. interp & perf by both.,,33,272

2,Dvorak,Violin Concerto In A Minor, Op. 53,,Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra,David Oistrakh, Cond.,Viktor Pikaizen (Violin),1st mvmt bold, shrill, shrieking, in a constant frenzy; like all the climaxes of the Brahms cto with no letup; quite Brahms-like (published about the same year); 3rd mvmt (R1) uses theme from 3rd of Beethoven's cto, modified.,,,33,2287

2,Enesco,Sonata No. 3 In A Minor For Violin And Piano, Op. 25 In The Popular Roumanian ,,,,Rafael Druian, Violin; John Simms, Piano,Generally 'gypsy' mood pervades chromatic, mysterious, dark piece with lots of unusual effects: swoops, slides, harmonics?, and strange harmonies; a very modern romanticism; interesting & strange, not fun.,,,33,651

4,Enesco,String Quartet In G Major, Op. 22, No. 2,,The Rumanian Radio String Quartet,,,Chromatic-dramatic expressive with seemingly random rhythmic modulations, in which Romanian folk influence is evident; reminds me of Bartok(?); seems interesting; peculiar-unconventional as background music, almost R3, but not really pleasant.,,,33,744

4,Faure,Piano Quartet In G Minor Op 45,,Festival Quartet,,,Teacher of Ravel; strange but effective selectively chromatic themes and good use of rhythm, in both fast and slow, but I got tired of it. 1,Grieg,Piano Concerto In A Minor, Op. 16,,The London Philharmonic Orchestra,Sir Adrian Boult,Shura Cherkassky, Piano,Murky recording often deemphasizes piano, but in some key places it's unusually clear; leisurely, rolling, lush, emotive interp; 2nd & 3rd mvmt esp. good; exc. perf. by both.,,,33,2165

3,Grieg,Piano Concerto In A Minor, Op. 16,,RCA Victor Symphony Orchestra,Alfred Wallenstein,Artur Rubinstein, Piano,Light, gentle perf; orch matches Rubinstein's light touch; neither is an asset for this piece. 3,Grieg,Quartet In G Minor, Op. 27,,Budapest String Quartet,,,Vigorous, angular, rhythmic, dramatic, with appealing folk melodies and strange harmonies; in spite of some appeal, lacks interest value; not something I'm likely to listen to often.,,,33,1121
