If you arrived at this page looking for a particular classical music piece so you could listen to it and find out what it sounds like, Tips for Searching for Music on the Internet has a list of websites and other resources that might help you find what you're looking for.

If you are searching for hard to find information about classical music or early 1900's popular music and you didn't find it here, that same Tips for Searching page might help you continue your search. Its sections are search engine tips, searching the "invisible" web, music search resources visible and invisible, and how to find album contents information, track timings, liner notes and background information, lyrics, scores and sheet music, audio files, music analysis, commentary and reviews, and where to identify the source of a classical music theme.

What is this page?

This set of web pages presents data from the RECORDS.MDB classical record collection database as CSV (Comma Separated Values) plain text. It has the contents of record albums, record company ID#s, and my brief reviews and comments about the composers, compositions, and performances.

If this jumble of text looks like the type of information you were looking for, this 420 KB file tracksforbrowsingandsearching.zip has the information from all these pages neatly formatted into a single table. The full unzipped table is nearly 7 MB, too big to put on a single web page because no one would wait for it to load. Unzip it and open the .htm file with your browser.

The project download section of RECORDS.MDB has this data in a tab delimited plain text format that should import properly into Excel or other spreadsheet or database programs. Lastly, if you download the RECORDS.MDB database itself, all this data is in it.

5,Alban Berg,Concerto For Violin And Orchestra,,New York Philharmonic,Leonard Bernstein,Isaac Stern, Violin,Exc. perf can't save this pseudo-expressive nonsense; maybe interesting to analysts, but it is ineffective, conveying nothing coherent; an all-chromatic composer is hobbled from the start, since scale and key changes are unavailable for mood changes.,,,33,766

5,Alban Berg,Lulu Suite (Complete),,The Philadelphia Orchestra,Eugene Ormandy,,(Probably) tone-row chromatic, meandering, expressive of nothing except maybe a musical impression of George Gershwin experiencing seasickness; just when you think it can't get any worse, a wailing Banshee starts singing.,,,33,1643

3,Alban Berg,Sonata, Op. 1,,,,Joerg Demus, Piano,Chromatic expressionist, played sensitively as though it is moody, with some effectiveness; sounds at times like Debussy, but with even less connection to standard harmony; not as far out as Schoenberg, seems exc. perf.,Exc. recording,,33,1102

1,Albinoni,Adagio For Strings And Organ,,The Sinfonia Instrumental Ensemble,Jean Witold,Denyse Gouarne, Harpsichord (Pleyel) And Organ; Philippe Lamacque, Violin,Suspenseful; familiar theme (or one similar to Gluck?); reminds me of Vivaldi's Nisi Dominus; effective use of organ with orch, a rarity.,,,33,1599

1,Albinoni,Concerto A Cinque In E Minor, Op. 5, No. 9,,The Sinfonia Instrumental Ensemble,Jean Witold,Denyse Gouarne, Harpsichord (Pleyel) And Organ; Philippe Lamacque, Violin,Handel/Vivaldi-like; a little gem that moves right along; too short.,,,33,1599

1,Andalessandro Marcello,Concerto For Two Guitars And Orchestra,,The Pro Arte Orchestra Of Munich,Kurt Redel,Ida Prest And Alexandre Lagoya, Guitarists,Quite Vivaldi-like; sounds inspired by Four Seasons, more introspective; some parts sound a bit Spanish, Sor-like. Very nice.,,,33,993

3,Andrea Gabrieli,Canzona In The Ionian Mode,Heritage Of The Baroque,The Telemann Society Orchestra,Richard Schulze, Conductor,,'One of earliest known instrumental compositions (1589)'. But record label says it is Ricercar on the 12th Tone, not the Canzona.,,,33,664

4,Anton Webern,String Quartet, Op. 28,,The Claremont Quartet,,,Very economical of notes, a few here, a few there, many plucked; the epitome of the style it exemplifies, it could be fairly interesting and seems quite good, but it's barely musical.,,,33,1693

1,Arriaga,Quartet No. 1 In D Minor,Juan Crisostomo Arriaga,Cuarteto Clasico De Radio Nacional De Espana,,,Inspired & enjoyable; occasionally a theme takes a brief Spanish turn; liner notes say his main influence was Haydn; otherwise I have trouble placing him; sounds typical of his era (1806-26) but with originality, too. Cherubini praised him.,,,33,1350

3,Arriaga,Quartet No. 2 In A Major,Juan Crisostomo Arriaga,Cuarteto Clasico De Radio Nacional De Espana,,,Much weaker than No. 1; vapid melody and dull sonorous orchestration mimics (or precedes?) Schubert (especially), Mendelssohn.,,,33,1350

0,Bach,,Great Violinists Of The 19th And 20th Centuries,,,,,,,33,400

2,Bach,Nun Komm Der Heiden Heiland,,Philadelphia Orchestra,Stokowski,Sills, Soprano,Gentle, sweet, flowing, melodic, with a sound more like Wagner's Siegfried Idyll than it is like anything else by Bach (partly due to Stokowski's scoring & interp, probably); exc. perf.,,,33,2084

3,Bach, C. P. E.,Concerto For Orchestra In D Major,A Treasury Of Haydn Symphonies And Concertos,,,,nice piece, shows more influence of Vivaldi and of Italian form and styles of orchestration and melody than it does of J.S.Bach. 3,Bach, C. P. E.,Concerto For Orchestra In D Major,The Bach Family,The Philadelphia Orchestra,Eugene Ormandy,,strangely, it hardly sounds like the same piece as #1311. Not sure I like this one a whole lot better; seems leaden, and less Italian.,Transcribed By Maximilian Steinberg,,33,650

2,Bach, J. S.,A Musical Offering, BWV 1079,,Concentus Musicus Wien,Harnoncourt,,Enjoyable to listen to; a series of fugal pieces (fugues, canons, ricercares) in formal style, some long; apparently of significant study value (crab canon, etc.), and apparently of great formal variety, though it mostly all sounds the same. (see memo),Good perf; even the harpsichord sounds good. Held out partly to save it from mold until I'm through listening to it. However, it's not particularly good listening; side 2 is better.,,33,2239

3,Bach, J. S.,All Men Are Mortal, S. 643,,,,Virgil Fox, On The Massive Riverside Church Organ in New York,Slow, dull, & more evolutional than melodic.,This is another Command Classic, with 3 pages of rhapsodic hyperbole about its excellence of performer, recording, and manufacture; naturally, the performance isn't that great, but at least the record isn't physically defective, and the recording IS good.,,33,2057

2,Bach, J. S.,Art Of The Fugue, Part 1, Contrapuncti 1 Through 11,,Fine Arts Quartet; New York Woodwind Quintet,,,Interesting, soothing. Like mellow organ fugues, but voice separation is easy to follow because they're handled by different instruments. All pretty much sound the same, but they're pleasant. Set intended for study. Seems well-played.,,,33,1041

4,Bach, J. S.,Art Of The Fugue, Part 2: Contrapuncti 11 Through 16,,Fine Arts Quartet; New York Woodwind Quintet,,,intended for study; very abstract; not as pleasant listening as #1041, though more lively, and fewer voices.,,,33,1042

3,Bach, J. S.,B Minor Mass,The Great Choral Works Of J.S.Bach,,,,Murky echoey recording; a cheerier more upbeat perf would sound less like droning church music and bring out its musical features, which it does seem to have; even so, each section sets a mood & motif and flogs it with vocal counterpoint, (see memo),with little forward thematic motion, so it's not exciting, though parts are very pleasant (R2) and soothing; in places like Vivaldi's Gloria, in other like Handel, even Purcell(?), Gluck; sides 2 and 5 are R2, the rest R3.,,33,2232
