Photographs from Skylake Yosemite Camp in the 1960's
After spending all summer having fun, when does it occur to kids to take
pictures? On the last day, while everyone is getting ready to leave! So all the places
in the pictures below look deserted. It would be great to go back to summer camp, and getting better pictures
would be the least of the good reasons.
I visited their website while putting this page together. The camp has changed, but not so much that I don't recognize it!
There are many new activities. Also, everything is in color now, unlike the
olden days when it was all black and white.
People in the photos are rendered as silhouettes. In the unlikely event that you recognize
yourself and wish to be even more blurry, let me know, and say Hi after all these years.

| The main lodge, dining, and assembly hall. Gold
Rush Day was fun. They splashed paint drips on rocks around camp. We ran
around all day picking them up and turning them in for money we could use at
Casino Night. I figured it was a way to get campers to clear the rocks from
the grounds, but it was still fun. Wonder if they still do it. Hope they
haven't run out of rocks. |
Another big gathering place, the campfire
circle and stage for announcements and skits. Ahwa--tagu--Siam! |
Just above the campfire circle was the
horseback riding ring, Western style. We also went on trail rides. |
Above the riding ring was the volleyball court.
The trail up the hill went to... |

rifle range. It looks like they've discontinued
riflery. |
The Bobcat tent. |
The ping pong table at the Bobcat tent was popular. |

| Looking across toward the Chipmunk tent, I
think. |
Looking the other way toward the Senior tent,
and maybe the CILT tent behind it. At right, the boys showers and bathroom building. |
The Senior tent. They were tents then. They
look more like cabins now. When the weather was good, which was almost always, we
slept outside in our sleeping bags on cots. |
From inside the Senior tent. |

| Skylake's beach on Bass Lake. Canoes at left and swimming area at right. I
did the Width Of The Lake swim and then the Length Of The Lake swim. We got
our names on a big board in the dining hall. Back then there weren't so many
names. By now there must be hundreds. Wonder if they still have
the old boards? |
Near the main lodge, the Nature Hut with information about animals and plants, and some pets. |
Another building, maybe the tackle house for
horseback riding equipment. |
